Investment Strategy

While our investment philosophy can be characterized as growth stage, since our portfolio companies typically have revenue or customer momentum, we are less focused on stage than we are drawn to companies with large market opportunities, unique intellectual property and outstanding management teams with a passion for building great businesses. Updata Partners targets companies that have reached an inflection point in their evolution where we can play a very active role in helping the company build tactical and strategic roadmaps for future success.

Reflecting this approach, we have invested in firms in the early, growth and buyout stages.  Consistent with all our investments is our deep involvement as a lead or co-lead investor.

Operational and Transactional Experience

The UpdataTM venture capital leadership team leverages our deep operational and transactional expertise to provide value to portfolio companies. With more than 150 collective years of software-based investing and operations experience, our team provides a value-added view of the software world to help our portfolio companies with:  business strategy; market positioning; introductions to facilitate channel strategies; assistance with executive recruitment; advice and expertise on acquisition strategies; and, optimizing and maximizing exit timing and value.

We have extensive experience working with large, publicly traded software companies and smaller, growth-stage companies and can help successfully evolve our companies through all stages.

Stage and Transaction Types

We will consider all stages and transactions as described below. Our principal focus is on companies with revenues up to $50 million with accelerating revenue momentum.  However, profitability is not required and we are interested in evaluating earlier stage opportunities.  Our capital is typically used in the following situations:

  • Growth Capital
  • Acquisition Financing and Consolidations
  • Buyouts, Recapitalizations and Corporate Spinoffs

Investment Size

Updata Partners is actively investing nearly $500 million out of three funds under management. We typically invest between $5 million and $10 million in a transaction and up to $20 million over the life cycle of our companies.
